Price Chopper Meets the Building Challenge

Price Chopper is one of many organizations across the country being recognized for rising to the challenge to reduce the energy they use, save money, and help the environment. As part of the Energy Star Building Challenge, Price Chopper is an Energy Star Leader for improving the energy efficiency of buildings.

"Across America, energy savings are soaring because organizations like Price Chopper are making smart energy decisions that are good for the environment and good for their wallets," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson. "Through ENERGY STAR, President Bush and EPA are improving the nation's energy and environmental outlook, and I applaud Price Chopper for helping hand the next generation a brighter, healthier future."

Many steps taken
The steps Price Chopper has taken in its stores across six states have cut carbon dioxide emissions associated with its electricity use by 75 percent.

"Price Chopper is honored to have achieved a designation of "Superior Portfolio-Wide Energy Performance" by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency," said Mona Golub, VP of Public Relations and Consumer Services for the 115-store supermarket chain. "This accomplishment clearly represents our commitment to reduce and conserve energy usage, as both a dedicated corporate citizen and good neighbor to the many communities in which we operate, she added.

Steps taken include:

  • The amount of light used overnight in stores open 24 hours has been cut.
  • Circulating fans used for refrigeration were replaced with more efficient models.
  • Cases that hold perishables now have insulating curtains that are closed at night.
  • Motion sensors turn off lights in offices, storage rooms and bathrooms when no one is present.
  • More efficient light bulbs replaced older models in 20 stores.
  • Spotlights have been eliminated when possible. (Some are required for reasons of safety.)
  • Through "peak load shedding," stores are able to immediately reduce electric usage during periods of peak demand.
  • In January 2007, Price Chopper hired its first store energy specialist to squeeze out even more savings.
