An Apple a Day Keeps the Dr. Away!
You've probably heard, or used, the above saying╔ but isn't it just something that parents use to get their children to eat apples? Apples have a NuVal score of 96! This makes them a very nutritious food! Apples are fat free, saturated fat free, sodium free, cholesterol free, and high in dietary fiber. Even if they don't keep the doctor completely away, they are certainly a healthy snacking option!
How to Select, Store, Prepare
Choose firm, shiny, smooth-skinned apples with intact stems. Apples should smell fresh, not musty. Refrigerate apples in plastic bag away from foods with strong odors. Use within 3 weeks. Enjoy apples at snack time, mealtime or anytime at all! Eat as a side dish or on a sandwich for a sweet or tart flavor. For extra crunch, color, flavor, and nutrition, add apple slices to a fruit tray, wraps and sandwiches. Add sliced/diced apples to salads or spread slices with peanut butter for a delicious and nutritious snack! Bake 'em! Remove the cores, leaving a 1/2 inch of the bottom of the apples. Pour a small amount of brown sugar and butter into the hole. Place the filled apples in an 8 x 8-inch square baking pan then add 3/4 cup of water to the pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 30-40 minutes until tender, not mushy. Make applesauce the way you like it! Do you prefer smooth or chunky, low sugar or sugar-free? And there are tons of things you can add for some extra flavor such as cinnamon or raisins. Get creative! Keep a bowl of the many different colored apples on your kitchen counter. Not only will it serve as a quick source for a healthy snack, but it's also the perfect room accent.
