More Matters When It Comes To Fruits & Veggies
by Lauren Proctor Remember how Mom always said, "Eat your vegetables and you'll grow up big and strong"? She was right! Low in calories and high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, produce is a tasty and nutritious way to guard against chronic diseases and some cancers. Yet recent research indicates that many Americans aren't heeding that advice - according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), less than a third of adults eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables.
To address this problem, CDC and the Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) have launched the More Matters initiative, which focuses on helping consumers to get an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables and to understand the benefits of healthy nutrition. Read More ...

Organic Food Shown Higher in Antioxidants
A ten-year study comparing organic tomatoes with standard varieties indicates the organic ones may be better for you, say researchers at the University of California. That's because they pack nearly double the flavonoids (a type of antioxidant) than conventionally grown crops. Lesser amounts of nitrogen in soil untouched by chemical fertilizer may be the key, the researchers suggest in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The researchers measured the amount of two flavonoids - quercetin and kaempferol in the two types of tomatoes. On average, organically grown tomatoes were 79 percent higher in quercetin and 97 percent higher in kaempferol. Flavonoids have been shown to reduce high blood pressure, lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke. Because they're produced as a defence mechanism that can be triggered by nutrient deficiency, a lack of nitrogen in the soil could increase their levels in foods, the researchers suggest.

Organic Watch: More Milk Money!
Thanks to a federal rule change that allowed more dairy farms to gain certification, the organic milk supply could go up by as much as 70 percent this year. With more brands competing for your dollar, you may also see slightly lowered milk prices throughout the summer, says Ed Maltby, executive director of the Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance. Organic milk comes from cows that aren't treated with antibiotics or the growth hormone rBGH and can offer almost twice as many heart-healing omega-3 fats. Other organic dairy products, such as lowfat smoothies, may be more plentiful, too. By Amy Gorin. Source: July 2007 issue of Prevention.

On the Horizon: Something to Moo About
New Studies Show Promising Results
It's long been known that low-fat dairy is high in calcium which is good for your bones. But did you know that cows which are allowed to pasture in the open air may have a higher Conjugated Linoleic Acids (CLA) content?According to the National Dairy Council, "CLA, found naturally in foods such as dairy foods and meat from ruminant animals, has a wide range of promising health benefits." Preliminary studies have found that CLAs may stimulate the immune response, enhance bone formation, exhibit anti-diabetic effects, and have anticarcinogenic effects. According to the Journal of Clinical Nutrition, research shows that "CLA levels in organic milk are often found to be 30 percent or more higher than in conventional milk." Organic dairy farmers see this as yet another benefit of open air pasture. For more information about the emerging health benefits of CLA, visit National Dairy Council. Organic Fruit Packs Healthy Punch
Researchers have confirmed what lovers of organic produce have long suspected: that fruits grown without chemicals can contain more healthy compounds. To test the notion, scientists at the University of California in Davis grew two plots of kiwis - one organically, and the other using more standard practices. When the kiwis were tested, the organic and non-organic fruits were nearly the same flavor-wise, but the organic fruit had higher levels of polyphenols and antioxidant activity. Polyphenols (found in red berries, peaches and pears, for example) may reduce cholesterol and improve blood circulation, according to previous studies. Antioxidants may help protect cells by neutralizing free radicals, other researchers have asserted. The recent study is published in the British journal of the Society of Chemical Industry.

No artificial growth hormones* milk is now available in the dairy case giving you a choice when it comes to purchasing milk for your family. Now available from Price Chopper in 1%, 2%, Fat Free and Homogenized varieties. Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is an artificially-produced version of this bovine growth hormone and is used for increasing milk production in cattle. Many consumers, especially mothers, are concerned about the foods they feed their children. They are looking for the absence of hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides. Sales of organic foods, including organic milk, are experiencing record growth. There is also an increased interest in milk without artificial growth hormones. All milk products are wholesome and make a positive contribution to a healthy lifestyle. At Price Chopper you now have more options to choose from! *No significant difference has been shown between milk derived from rbST-treated cows and non rbST- treated cows.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has set national standards that food labeled "organic" must meet, whether it's grown in the United States or imported. When you buy food labeled "organic" you can be sure it was produced using the highest organic production and handling standards in the world. Organic foods are produced using renewable resources and proven soil and water conservation practices. They contain no antibiotics, growth hormones, synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. They also contain no ingredients that have been bio-engineered or gentically modified, and are never subjected to ionizing radiation. These foods may differ somewhat from those labeled "all natural."
