Omega-6 Gets Bad Rap, Science Says
Any bad publicity for omega-6 fatty acids is unfounded, says the American Heart Association. Some speculate that the chemicals - found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds - might increase the risk of heart disease because one component of omega-6 is a building block for some inflammation-related molecules. Inflammation has been shown to be associated with greater heart disease risk. However, omega-6 in the body create both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory compounds, scientists note. Plus, omega-6 fatty acids, like omega-3 fatty acids, are polyunsaturated and a better alternative to saturated fats. Researchers looked at more than two dozen controlled and observational studies over two years and found people who ate the most omega-6 fatty acids generally had a lower incidence of heart disease. The research is detailed in the Jan. 26 online issue of Circulation.
