UN-packing Pet Pounds
Nowadays, many pets suffer from owner-induced problems, such as being overweight. Let’s face it, barring health issues, we control what and how much our pets eat; so if they are overweight, it’s our fault.
When pets are packing on the pounds, sometimes the solution is as simple as exercise. Unless we keep our furry friends active, they might become, literally, couch potatoes, with lots of butter on the sides.
Most cats are easily enticed into jumping and leaping games with something as simple as a feather tied to the end of a line on a wooden dowel. Playing hunting games are easy and can be done during commercial breaks while you’re watching television. A cardboard box can make an intriguing cat fun-house. Cut cat-sized holes high and low and put it by your favorite recliner. Then, keep your feather-on-a-rod handy to go cat fishing!
It’s a little harder to get dogs active, because it translates into more effort on the owner’s part. One of the easiest ways to get your dog out and about is walking. Just adding one block to a walk can help. If you don’t have the time, consider hiring someone to walk your dog for half an hour or longer, even once a week.
Treats can be a major contributor to weight problems. Nowadays, a lot of training involves treats. If treats are a weighty factor, replace them with some of your dog’s mealtime kibble. For example, take half of your dog’s kibble and throughout the day, use it for training rewards instead of fatty treats.
Keeping our weight ideal is hard enough, but we also have to watch the scales for our pets – that is, until they start coming to the grocery store with us and deciding what’s for dinner.
